The ultimate custom kitchen

A diminutive wife and mother, very young children and a eye to detail guided the design of this extraordinary kitchen remodel.

At only 5’ tall, the woman of the house wanted a kitchen in which she could be comfortable while preparing her gourmet meals and keeping a careful watch on her young children. With meticulous measurements, all working spaces are a bit lower than normal, making food preparation on the counters and island easier. The core, most used storage areas are under custom built cabinets, making access easier, especially for the children. When designing the pantry, shelf placement was determined by measuring cereal boxes and canned goods. Each drawer was created by measuring spice containers, odd shaped utensils, storage containers and other kitchen elements. The cabinets were custom made from quarter sawn oak paneling from Minnesota. Additional paneling was installed as wainscotting, complementing the cabinets.

With a spacious back yard, the children love to play outside, so a 10’ wide bay window was installed over the kitchen sink, but with a twist: the window drops directly onto the granite countertop affording an unobstructed view of the yard, helpful when tending to kitchen chores yet keeping an eye on the play activities.

Study and internet activities are also monitored with the inclusion of a computer center in the kitchen area.

A cork floor adds another layer of luxury: it is comfortable to walk on, a dropped dish doesn’t shatter, it is easy to maintain and is very durable.

“I absolutely love my kitchen, ” the homeowner said. ”For years I collected photos of kitchens, circling those features I liked. When it came time to create this room, I knew what I was looking for and now I have the perfect blend of beauty, functionality, and it even fits my short stature!”
